Abstract
The goal of the study was to evaluate the effect of blending Neopentyl Glycol (NPG) Esters (from Calophyllum Inophyllum Oil (Tamanu Oil) with Pebax(R) commercial engine oils. NPG Esters are easily renewable, carbon-neutral, and environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based lubricants and were particularly sought after for their superior performance as lubricants. Engine oils were mixed with NPG Esters in various concentrations (5% to 30% v/v), and then carefully evaluated for their tribological properties. Comparison of the tribological properties of the engine oils changed with NPG Esters showed that the added bio-lubricants would enhance the tribological performance of the base oils by at least 25% over typical base oil viscosity recommendations. However, the modified engine oil also showed significant decreases
in both wear and friction coefficients compared to the recommended concentrations. The addition of NPG Esters proves that the use of NPG Esters can increase the performance of commercial engine oils through improved tribological properties while also providing a sustainable and
environmentally responsible choice for future lubrication applications.
